The Process

Individually painted by hand, each silk or stretch fabric is a unique work of textile art. Using a paint brush or air brush, color and line was developed for each specific dancer and character within the Shakespeare story. Created with natural variations that are truly one of a kind, every piece was meant to evoke the underwater world created by Michele Oka Doner for this re-invention of Balanchine’s classic tale. Jellyfish, water bubbles, coral and sand… they can all be found with a closer look.

The costume designs were new interpretations of Michele Oka Doner’s concepts, commissioned by the Miami City Ballet for the 2024 production of George Balanchine’s “Midsummer Night’s Dream”.
